A few weeks back, I was at the Nairobi National Museum and came across beautiful artwork on display by Samuel Kamau Kariuki who describes himself as “a self-taught acrylic visual artist”. It was a nice surprise tucked away in the corridors of the museum amidst the standard animal, bird and history displays.
I decontextualize then I reconstruct. I look past the obvious, and engage the subject, this is my process. The challenge is to see beyond the distraction of the conspicuous, to capture the unique self by holding a point in space and still connecting all these separate points to create form. My goal is to inspire those that see my work to look more carefully at the world around them. To get them to discover that beauty can indeed exist where least expected.Kamau Kariuki
